I decided that it might help my trouble with description if I practiced writing descriptive paragraphs. I started by first writing a description of a character and then writing a physical description of a location. Like most things, it went slightly awry. I found that my physical descriptions became poems. I wrote poetry long, long , long before I wrote prose. During what seems like a different life. I tried to get back to it just before I started to write prose but it wouldn’t come. Well, now it is coming. Below is one of the pieces with the picture which inspired it.
The slow descent, rib slowly meeting rib,
Spaces between shrinking, shrinking, excruciatingly slow,
Steel planks, grey in the grey day, graceful in their fall.
Buildings behind, distanced by
Spines breaking solid lines, the fixed across,
Breaking the soaring up by
The geometric precision of the closing fan.
At rest now, the buildings loom above a simple bridge.
